Ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan is reportedly holding 15 domestic workers against their will since 2019.
Former First Lady Patience Jonathan is accused of unlawfully detaining 15 domestic workers at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Bayelsa State since 2019, linked to unsubstantiated allegations of theft involving her jewelry.
Reports from SaharaReporters indicate that, despite the absence of any court conviction, these workers remain incarcerated due to repeated delays in their trial, allegedly instigated by the powerful former First Lady.
Individuals familiar with the situation have expressed alarm and are calling for immediate action to ensure justice is served. "Since 2019, Patience Jonathan has held approximately 16 of her domestic employees on accusations of stealing her jewelry, without adhering to proper legal procedures," stated one insider.
A family member of one of the detained workers revealed that the arrests were prompted by a burglary at one of Jonathan's residences in Otuoke. "She commanded the arrest of all her domestic staff, including those who were not present in that apartment at the time," the relative clarified.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations—including armed robbery, malicious damage, attempted murder, and theft—no substantial evidence has been presented in court. "The proceedings have been stalled, with officials claiming they are awaiting witnesses who have yet to come forward," another source remarked.
The list of detained workers includes Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Saabi Liman, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Williams Alami, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Waribobo, Salomi Reginald, Sunday Boma, Oba Golden, and Vivian.
Legal professionals contend that their extended detention contravenes Nigeria's constitutional provisions regarding the presumption of innocence and the right to personal freedom. Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution asserts that an accused individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty, while Section 35 prohibits detention beyond a reasonable timeframe without trial.
Sources allege that the case has been intentionally delayed in court at Jonathan's behest.
