Nnamdi Kanu Expresses Optimism for April Release, Criticizes Igbo Political Leaders.

The President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, has disclosed that Nnamdi Kanu is hopeful about being released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) by April 2025.

Following his visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, Ezenekwe stated that Kanu expressed his dissatisfaction with the absence of robust Igbo leadership and urged for renewed efforts to advocate for the interests of the region.

Ezenekwe noted that despite his detention, Kanu appeared to be in good health, had gained weight, and maintained a positive outlook. Kanu reportedly reiterated his trust in his legal representatives and expressed optimism that the courts would grant him freedom in the near future.

Nevertheless, he voiced concerns regarding the worsening situation of the Igbo people in Nigeria, emphasizing that there are no significant voices actively championing their cause.

Ezenekwe also shared Kanu’s worries about the historical neglect faced by Igbo freedom fighters, referencing Ralph Uwazurike, who, according to Kanu, had noble intentions but was abandoned by his community during his time in prison. He cautioned that such neglect could undermine the fight for self-determination.

In his statement on Thursday, Ezenekwe made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take action in Kanu’s case. He reminded the president of his previous involvement in the pro-democracy movement and called for him to exhibit the political resolve necessary to facilitate Kanu’s release.

He asserted that the ongoing detention of the IPOB leader symbolizes political oppression rather than justice.

The statement elaborated, “On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 1:30 pm, I had the privilege of visiting Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the DSS headquarters in Abuja. In an environment marked by political tension and community aspirations, our meeting served as a crucial reminder of our collective struggle for recognition and justice.”
