Police Detain Individual in Connection with Cow Poisoning Incident in Benue

A farmer has been apprehended in relation to the poisoning of cows in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, as reported by local officials.

This arrest was made following an investigation into the recent poisoning of 20 cows, an act that has drawn strong condemnation from the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Risku Muhammed, the Chairman of MACBAN in Benue State, has accused criminal elements in the Agatu LGA of engaging in both poisoning and cattle rustling.

He stated that the incident occurred on Saturday in Ucha village, where a farmer named Bawa Oneh allegedly poisoned rice chaff and invited a herder to feed it to the cows.

As a result, 13 cows died, while seven others are currently receiving treatment from a veterinary doctor.

“Our members reported that a criminal had poisoned rice chaff and invited one of our members to allow his cows to graze on it,” Muhammed explained.

“Regrettably, 13 cows died immediately, and seven others are being treated.”

This incident follows another cattle rustling event that took place the previous Thursday, during which 200 cows were stolen.

Fortunately, security forces acted swiftly, apprehending one of the rustlers, although others managed to flee.

Muhammed commended the quick response of Agatu LGA chairman, Melvin James, who acted promptly regarding the situation involving herders and local communities.

He also acknowledged the local government and non-governmental organizations for their ongoing support, including compensation for cows lost to criminal activities in the area.

“The local government chairman, along with NGOs, has been proactive in providing compensation for cows lost to these criminals,” Muhammed stated.

The MACBAN chairman further noted that these criminals have been responsible for a series of cattle rustling incidents and killings across various villages, including Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, Okwtanobe, and now Ucha.

In response to the situation, Melvin James, the Chairman of Agatu LGA, confirmed the arrest of a farmer in connection with the incident.
