Prominent Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, commonly referred to as VeryDarkMan (VDM), expressed his outrage and revulsion upon witnessing a young man defecating in public atop a bridge in Lagos.

VDM recounted that he had just arrived in Lagos when a vehicle in front of him flashed its headlights, revealing, to his astonishment, a man openly relieving himself on the well-known Ikeja bridge leading to the airport. Infuriated by this behavior, VDM confronted the individual and insisted that he clean up after himself.

Left with no alternative, the man reluctantly gathered his waste and was shamefully recorded as he walked away, holding it in his hand. In disbelief, VDM raised concerns about why such unsanitary and unacceptable actions persist without repercussions and questioned the silence of bystanders regarding the issue.

Public defecation is a phenomenon that I find difficult to comprehend; it reflects a complete lack of shame or consideration.

While it may be somewhat understandable to relieve oneself in a secluded area such as a dense bush or forest, the act of openly squatting and defecating in public view is not only degrading but also visually offensive.

In Abuja, the situation is quite prevalent. Once individuals arrive in an area devoid of housing, they tend to seek out a mosque or a prayer ground, and the rest follows suit, with every nearby gutter becoming a receptacle for waste.

What is particularly troubling is that facilities are being constructed for their use, yet many would rather endure hardship than utilize these amenities.

This issue is notably evident near the federal housing area by the bridge along the expressway.
